Where the numbers come from: the World Inequality Database (wid.world) — the research project behind the work of Thomas Piketty, Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman. Figures are per adult, pre-tax national income, latest available year. Wealth is net personal wealth per adult.

Why "per adult" matters: the numbers split household income and wealth equally between adults in the household. So if you and a partner share finances, compare using roughly half the household total.

About currencies: pick whatever currency your number is in — it gets converted for you, for every country. Exchange rates are approximate snapshots, not live quotes, so treat conversions as close-enough, not to-the-penny. A handful of countries with highly unstable or multi-tier exchange rates (for example economies under sanctions or in active conflict) don't have one trustworthy market rate to convert from, so those are shown in their own local currency only.

How the global comparison works: your number is converted using purchasing-power parity, which adjusts for the fact that the same money buys different amounts in different countries. It's the fairest way to compare across borders, and it's still an estimate.

Why am I in a much higher percentile globally than in my own country?

Because global inequality is far larger than inequality within any single country. A median income in a wealthy country typically lands in the top 10 percent worldwide. Most people are surprised by this — it's the most interesting thing this calculator shows.

How accurate are the currency conversions?

Exchange rates are approximate snapshots refreshed periodically, not live market quotes, so treat conversions as close-enough rather than exact. The percentile itself comes from the underlying distribution data and doesn't depend on the display currency.
